About the Founders

Sam’s Caribbean Market was founded by a determined couple who came to New York from Jamaica in the late 1970s with just $50 each, the maximum allowed by the Jamaican government at the time. Though Jean and her husband met in New York, their shared heritage and entrepreneurial spirit became the foundation of the business. In 1993, Sam (a nickname adopted in honor of Jean’s late father, Samuel Bonar) took a leap of faith, quitting his job to launch the business with no experience beyond being a devoted shopper. What started with a $200 household oven, used to bake over 70,000 Jamaican patties annually, has grown into one of the few Caribbean-owned grocery stores in the NY tri-state area. Today, their daughter Melissa, who’s been involved since age 14, and their son, a U.S. Navy veteran now serving in the Army National Guard, continue the family’s legacy of hard work and cultural pride.
